WALKERS/ WALKING STICKS PROJECT

nka_walker_project_2022_01In fulfillment of part of its social responsibility for 2022, Nka Ikem Esit Charitable Organization undertook an outreach project to benefit families in need back home in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. The walker /walking sticks initiative was introduced by Rita Nyambi, and it took off in earnest in the Spring of 2022. Funds were raised internally to support this project. Members also supported by donating new and used walkers and walking sticks.

As a group, Nka Members came out en mass on September 9, 2022, to get all the items boxed up and ready for shipment. This event brought back the spirit of comrades that the Association is known for pre-covid.

The Cross River State Women’s Emancipation Initiative (CROWEI) group also operating as the Exquisite Ladies Foundation was contacted to help execute the project in Calabar on behalf of Nka Ikem Esit. The shipment was received in good condition and the Society for the Blind, known as Above Limitation members, Amputees, and a few elderly people, were designated to receive these donations. This donation to the visually impaired was just one of the many activities earmarked for the International White Cane Day Celebration slated for October 15, 2022.

The Community event was held on Thursday, September 29, 2022.

Through this donation from Nka, The Women’s Initiative group sponsored media publicity, road walk sensitization of the public on the use of white cane by people with visual impairment of their Right of way, and training of this group on mobility and orientation. Her Excellency, Lady Dr. (Mrs) Linda Ayade who is the Grand Patron of the Women’s Initiative group and First Lady of Cross River State was the Guest of honor (even though ably represented by her Special Adviser on events due to exigency of duty).
